ABOUT 100155 Painted Miniatures for Discovering 1001 Stories (for 1 - 10 players of all ages) 55 pastel paintings in card format spirit us away to old Arabia and the fairytale world of the thousand and one nights. Once upon a time there lived a king there, who, vowing to trust no woman, had each night's companion beheaded on the following morning. The clever and courageous Scheherazade used her wits to avoid the fate of her predecessors. Her night with the king was spent in storytelling, one tale leading into the next, the last tale still unfinished with the arrival of dawn. How could her life be ended when the king was already looking forward to the next evening's continuing story? And so Scheherazade's life was extended day by day, tale by tale, until 1001 nights had softened the king's heart and disarmed his cruel strategy. The 1001 cards invite us to enter the world of imagination and find our own stories there. Each card is a door opening into a land where demons and beauties, palaces and tents, caravans and sea voyages, hidden treasures and flying carpets await us. Just take a card and enter - the story begins! In this game of storytelling there's no winning or losing, no right or wrong. Fantasy is without limits and so are the possibilities for creating new stories. The cards give the impulse, our power of association builds the tale. Each one of us, like Scheherazade, could fill 1001 nights with unending imagination! 1001 can be used by groups, pairs or individuals, by children, young people and adults of all ages. It can also be used in combination with the SAGA and MYTHOS storytelling cards. Author & © Andrée Pouliot, 2003 Canadian artist Andrée Pouliot lived for 17 years in India. There she learned the classical art of miniature painting, expanding on the training she had completed in the West as a graphic artist. These skills combined with her in-depth study of Indian, Persian and Arabian mythologies to build the culturally diverse foundation upon which Andrée's current work is based. Her studies, her life experiences and her art, including the 1001 cards, bring three ancient cultures together in modern times, as did Sindbad the Sailor in the ancient ones, traveling from Arabia over Persia to India in the "Arabian Nights" of Scheherazade. Myths, legends and fairy tales have been with us as long as humans have lived in groups. Not only are they rooted in the past, they are always in development, changing along with the cultures who tell and re-tell them. Besides being great entertainment, such stories are also distillations of universal human experience and, as such, can be seen as mirrors of culture. Thus we see such themes as birth, journeys, adventures and death present in the tales of the most diverse cultures, simply dressed in different clothes. And so with 1001 we play at exploring our inner myths, dressing them this time in the garb of old Arabia. Let the emphasis be on the telling of your own made-up tales rather than making an attempt to re-tell Scheherazade or compete in the department of historical correctness. The images of 1001 are meant to stimulate associations. They are intended to represent aspects of stories rather than specific stories themselves. In the discovery and telling of such myths, legends and fairy tales we participate in the same age-old tradition as did our ancestors and forerunners. And at the same time we are adding to the tradition the spice of our own times and contributing to the on-going development of legends, myths and fairy tales within the contemporary context. Thus these 55 cards can lead not just to 1001 but to unlimited stories - new, unique and personal every time we open the deck!
