ANIMATED STORY
My newest project is to produce a digital animated art and sound piece designed for the web, using my own stories and paintings. I received a grant in 2003 to produce phase one of a digital animation art piece with the working title, "My life in India over Three Centuries", from the City of Ottawa Arts Funding Programme. My story is a sort of "fantasy-autobiographical" journey to India, that takes me from my snowy Canadian home to the vibrant forests and bazaars of India. On the way I meet Hindu spirit guides, and with them I fall back through the 19th century and the 18th, and back to the 21st, having adventures all the way. I have painted the backgrounds and details in gouache and pastel, through which my character travels in a photographic format. The piece will be interactive. In 2003 I am working on phase one, there are altogether five phases to complete the story.
My digital art is a merging of old and new; the material itself is painted the 'old' way, using miniature painting techniques that are my chosen practice, which are then transformed using the completely new digital format, with the audio element rounding out the work. Animating my stories is literally a 'dream come true', in which I was moving through one of my paintings. I am delighted with this new material, for me, another type of 'collage'!
My collaborators are the very talented graphic designer and animator, Stephanie Pelot, with Jean-Pierre Béland of Pentafolio Multimedia. The sound track is being created by the very able audio artist Douglas Samuel of The Sound Trax studio. The finished work will be available for public viewing on the world wide web. I am very excited about making my artwork available nationally and internationally, on the internet.
